Hidden in the rugged desert canyons of southern Jordan, Petra stands as a testament to ancient civilizations, breathtaking architecture, and rich history. Recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this UNESCO-listed archaeological site is a must-visit destination for history lovers and adventure seekers alike.
Petra’s rose-colored sandstone cliffs, carved into intricate tombs and temples, narrate stories of Nabataean traders, Roman rulers, and Bedouin tribes. From the iconic Treasury (Al-Khazneh) to the towering Monastery (Ad-Deir), every corner of Petra reflects ancient craftsmanship and cultural fusion.
Petra’s history spans over 10,000 years, making it a living museum of human civilization. Initially settled by the Neolithic inhabitants of Al-Beidha, the region later became home to the Edomites, followed by the Nabataeans, an Arabian tribe of traders and merchants.
By the 4th century BC, Petra thrived as a center for spice and incense trade, connecting Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. The Nabataeans mastered water conservation, constructing intricate irrigation systems, reservoirs, and rock-carved channels to sustain their desert city. Despite multiple Roman attempts to conquer Petra, the Nabataeans remained independent until 106 AD when Emperor Trajan annexed the city into the Roman Empire.
A visit to Petra is a journey through time, revealing incredible relics from Nabataean, Roman, and Byzantine eras. Below are some of the must-visit sites inside Petra:
The Siq is a 1.2 km-long natural rock passage that serves as the main entrance to Petra. This narrow canyon, flanked by towering 100-meter-high cliffs, leads visitors to the city's heart. Along the route, you’ll find ancient water channels, rock inscriptions, and weathered carvings, hinting at the Nabataeans’ engineering prowess.
As the Siq opens up, the breathtaking Treasury (Al-Khazneh) emerges. This majestic 40-meter-tall façade, carved into rose-red sandstone, is Petra’s most famous structure. Originally built as a royal tomb for Nabataean King Aretas III, legends say it once housed hidden treasures. The urn at the top bears bullet marks from Bedouins who tried to uncover its secrets.
The Royal Tombs, located on Jebel al-Khubtha, include the Urn Tomb, Silk Tomb, Corinthian Tomb, and Palace Tomb. These grand rock-cut structures housed the remains of Nabataean royalty and elite rulers.
Built by the Nabataeans and later expanded by the Romans, this 7,000-seat amphitheater was a hub for cultural performances and public gatherings. Carved directly into the rock, it showcases a unique blend of Nabataean and Roman architectural styles.
Located 800 steps above the city, the Monastery (Ad-Deir) is Petra’s largest and most impressive tomb. Measuring 46 meters wide and 48 meters tall, it resembles the Treasury but on a much grander scale. The panoramic view from the top is among the best in Petra.
For the best panoramic view of Petra, hike to the High Place of Sacrifice, an ancient Nabataean altar used for religious rituals. The hike takes around 30 minutes and offers an incredible vantage point over the entire archaeological site.
One of the few free-standing structures in Petra, Qasr al-Bint was once a grand temple dedicated to Dushara, the principal deity of the Nabataeans. The Romans later damaged the temple, but its ruins still stand tall today.
Located just 9 km north of Petra, Little Petra offers a quieter but equally captivating experience. Known as Siq al-Barid, this site features rock-cut tombs, temples, and a well-preserved painted triclinium.
